THAT'S A LOTOF WATER.

EDITION 2026-10-16 / SOURCE CHECKED 2026-10-16

A new report. A different question.

A new publication can improve the evidence without changing the litres on your receipt.

Event: report published 14 October 2026 · edition and source review: 16 October 2026.

What changed

The IEA published Powering Artificial Intelligence, including analysis of where identified AI-dedicated capacity sits relative to baseline water stress. See the publication and the water section, printed pages 31–32.

What it means

Location exposure is a useful screening question. It does not measure consumption. The report notes missing cooling information, which prevents determining on-site consumption from that dataset.

What remains unresolved

The executive summary and body/chart give different exposure percentages. We have not established why, so we do not turn either into a headline score.

The receipt series is unchanged. No compatible replacement global litres series was approved in this review. A new publication date is not a measured increase in water consumption.
